We recommend that you plan your journey before you travel. London is a very busy city and can be overwhelming after a long flight.
The tfl (Transport for London) journey planner is a useful website that will help you choose the best route and connection for your journey.
Arriving in London
Travelling by Taxi
All London airports have a good (if expensive) connection to central London. It will be much cheaper (and also quicker) to use public transport than taking a black cab from the airport. See the information under Airports below.
If you prefer to travel by taxi you should book it in advance. Although black cabs are available outside London’s airports, they will cost almost twice as much as a booked taxi. For example, a black cab from Heathrow Airport to central London will cost roughly £70–£90, while a booked taxi will cost just £35–£40.
Please note: these prices are only estimates and may vary depending on where you need to go and which company you use. For details on how to book, see the website of your arrival airport below.

By Train: Heathrow Express/Heathrow Connect
The Heathrow Express has four non-stop trains per hour direct to Paddington Station; this is the quickest and easiest way to get to central London from Heathrow Airport. A one-way ticket costs £15.50. There are three stations at Heathrow: Central (for Terminals 1, 2, and 3), Terminal 4, and Terminal 5. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes. Click here for times and fares.
A slightly cheaper option (£9.50 one-way) is Heathrow Connect, a slower train that will also take you to Paddington Station, making stops along the way (journey time approximately 30 minutes). Click here for times and fares.
Once you arrive at Paddington Station, if two or more of you are travelling together, it will be easier and roughly the same price to take a black cab to your final destination (approximately £10). The cash price for a single ticket on the London Underground in central London is now £4 per person.
London Underground (‘The Tube’)
Heathrow Airport has three Underground stations on the Piccadilly Line. The London Underground is the cheapest way to travel to and from Heathrow, but it takes a long time (approximately 1 hour to central London). Click here for further details.
By Coach
National Express Coaches connects Heathrow's central bus station and Victoria Coach Station in central London. Coaches run approximately three times per hour and the journey takes about 45 minutes, depending on traffic. Click here for times and fares.
By Taxi: Black Cab (London Taxis)
Black cabs are usually to be found queuing outside each terminal. The fare is metered and may cost more in the evenings and at weekends. Expect to pay at least £70 to get to central London.

By Train: Gatwick Express/First Captial Connect Trains
Gatwick Express offers a good service between Gatwick Airport and Victoria Station, central London. With a journey time of just 30 minutes (35 minutes on Sundays) it is the fastest way to travel to the city centre. Click here for times and fares.
From Victoria Station, if two or more of you are travelling together, it will be easier and roughly the same price to take a black cab to your final destination (approximately £10). The cash price for a single ticket on the London Underground in central London is now £4 per person.
First Capital Connect Trains from Gatwick offer a very similar service at a much cheaper price. The main difference of First Capital Connect to the Gatwick Express is the route and time. Trains branch off to London Bridge Station and then make several stops through London to Kings Cross. Unlike the Gatwick Express, most of the passengers are not airport travellers, and as a result the trains can get crowded at peak times. From Kings Cross it is possible to walk to most hotels close to the British Museum. Click here for times and fares.
By Coach
National Express Coaches has a direct service to Victoria Coach Station in central London. The journey time is approximately 90 minutes. Click here for times and fares.
By Taxi
Gatwick Airport is further from central London than Heathrow Airport, so expect to pay between £95 and £120 for a black cab and £60–£80 for a pre-booked taxi.

By Train: Stansted Express
Stansted Express is the fastest way to central London (via London Liverpool Street Station), with trains departing every 15 minutes and an average journey time of 45 minutes. Click here for times and fares.
By Coach
National Express Coaches has a good service from Stansted Airport to Victoria Coach Station. However, the journey can take a long time, as the coach serves a lot of stations on the way to Victoria. Click here for times and fares.
By Taxi
We do not recommend taking a taxi from Stansted Airport, as the costs will be extremely high and the journey will take much longer than by train.
